Opinion policy: The Tobacco Valley News strives to represent a diversity of opinion on this page. Opinions expressed are those of the individuals involved. Only editorials clearly marked as such reflect the views of this newspaper.

Editorial policy: We consider an editorial as reflecting the newspaper’s view on an issue. In developing editorials, the newspaper staff considers what, in its collective view, is best for the community. Editorials often suggest a course of action or encourage discussion.

Letters policy: We love local letters to the editor on topics of general public interest. A letter to the editor is a reader’s view on an issue, submitted to the newspaper for publication. Original letters should be 450 or fewer words and must include the writer’s name, address and day-time telephone number for verification only. “Open letters” and “thank yous” are not considered as editorial submissions. Deadline is noon Monday.

Column policy: A column is one person’s opinion on any given issue. A column does not reflect the views of the paper. We publish a couple syndicated columnists and welcome local columns of 800 words or fewer. All submissions will be edited for style, grammar and clarity. Publication depends on space available.

Obituaries: The Tobacco Valley News runs brief death notices at no charge.  A death notice is no more than three paragraphs which may include: • Name and age of the deceased, date, location and cause of death; • time and place of services; • immediate survivors; • arrangements by. A full obituary with photos runs $19 per folio, which is 100 words, plus $15 per photo.
