Dr. Andrew Ivy

Andrew C. Ivy M.D., 88, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Eureka.

He was born Sept. 8, 1924, in Chicago, Ill. Dr. Ivy was the third of five boys born to physician parents Emma Kohman and Andrew C. Ivy, after whom he was named.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Dr. Ivy attended Northwestern University, where he excelled athletically in football and wrestling, and academically, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.   After completing medical school on scholarship from Northwestern Medical School, he served as physician and surgeon in a MASH unit in Korea.

After completing his military service he began a 25 year surgical practice in Honolulu, Hawaii, before moving to Montana in 1977.

Not one to retire, “Doc,” as he was known in the community, began a life of volunteering and giving back to his new home of Eureka. In addition to his active medical and surgical practice, he helped organize the first Rendezvous Days, was a founder of Riverwalk, active in the Lions Club, and organized fund-raisers for a number of causes to improve the community. He was a familiar face at the Tobacco Valley Rodeo as a promoter and for raising money for new bleachers.

Anticipating the medical needs of a growing community, Dr. Ivy paved the way to secure a health care clinic in Eureka by establishing North Valley Hospital’s North Country Medical Clinic.

Dr. Ivy is survived by his wife, Hazel; daughters LeeAnn, Patsy, Jolani, Nancy, Tawnya and Wayne, Jana and Darwin, and his many grandchildren who brought such joy to his life.

Services were Monday, May 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Eureka, followed by military honors and a celebration of life at the rural Eureka home of Darwin and Jana Ivy.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Dr. Ivy’s name can be made to the Riverwalk Foundation, Eureka.
